Tarka L'Herpiniere is an inspirational endurance athlete, explorer, filmmaker and Motivational Speaker, He speaks with passion about taking opportunities and facing difficult challenges and, in doing so, thinking of innovative solutions when the odds are stacked against you. He inspires others to question their own self-imposed limitations and to set and achieve ambitious goals.
Tarka's achievements include leading the longest crossing of the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap by a British team, which was carried out in 2009, and walking the length of the Great Wall of China from West to East, a journey of more than 3,000 miles (4,300 km), with his partner Katie-Jane. "The Great Walk of China" is an award-winning documentary about their expedition, which took them through rural China and remote, dramatic and often inhospitable landscapes. They had to face extremes of temperature and terrain: from the heat of the Gobi desert to a decidedly cold -35°C in remote mountain ranges. Tarka and Katie-Jane have developed an inspiring dual talk, giving both sides of their unique story.
A promising rugby player, Tarka played with the England Under 18 training squad and then a season for London Wasps and Bath Rugby Club whilst at University. However, Tarka's first love was adventure and in particular, the French Alps, where he returned in the holidays from his English school.
Tarka's broad range of experiences are drawn upon during his tailor-made presentations (designed to suit individual client needs) - and his humour, dramatic photographs and inspiring film footage ensure that his messages are memorable. Speaker Topics include: Follow your dreams; Persevere despite difficulties and set-backs; Courage and conquering the fear of failure; Achieve your goals - achieve your potential.
Before meeting Tarka, Katie-Jane worked hard to build a career as a successful model. Working for M&S and Alexander McQueen, among others, Katie also took opportunities to work in the film-world, acting as Cameron Diaz's body-double in The Holiday. Meeting Tarka changed everything for Katie-Jane, and their explorations and adventures across the world soon became an intrinsic part of her life. Katie-Jane wasn't afraid of these challenges, having proved her skill in sports through competing successfully on horseback at Eventing, but Tarka's suggestion they do a major six-month trek along the Great Wall of China was something else! During the trek, Katie-Jane had to be admitted to hospital twice, and she lost an inch in height from the weight of her backpack! Staying motivated and focused on her goals was vital.
Since then, Katie-Jane has cycled through Ethiopia, worked on an environmental project at the North Pole and completed the first major crossing by a woman of the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap (facing extreme storms and surviving days in a makeshift shelter when their tent failed in a storm). The Rivers of Ice Expedition in Patagonia made the international news headlines, emphasising Katie-Jane's and Tarka's courage in the face of danger.
As with Tarka, Katie-Jane also demonstrates that we can embrace change, leave our comfort zones, survive tough times and achieve what seems impossible. Katie-Jane is passionate about awaking this potential in others. Her Speaker Topics include: Having the courage to change; Staying motivated in tough times; Setting and achieving goals.
