Garden designer and broadcaster Matt James is the host of Channel 4's long-running The City Gardener, in which he inspires city dwellers to transform their outdoor spaces into beautiful gardens.
Matt's gardening career began when he was a teenager working on a small farm. He then went onto work in several nurseries and study at various horticultural colleges, eventually becoming a lecturer at the renowned Garden Design degree course at University College, Falmouth (now Falmouth University). He has worked on a number of innovative projects in the field of environment and regeneration, being honoured in 2000 as Londoner-of-the-Year in recognition of his work establishing a successful circuit of farmers' markets in the capital.
The City Gardener series began in 2003 and was an instant hit with urban city dwellers that might otherwise overlook their potential gardens due to a busy schedule. After taking off in the UK, the show was broadcast around the globe, and two spin-off series about urban garden design in the US - Urban Outsiders - soon followed.
The success of The City Gardener led to other TV programmes featuring Matt, including Matt James' Eco Eden (UKTV), The Insider (Channel 4) and Selling Houses (Channel 4). He has also made regular guest appearances on TV programmes, including ITV's Love Your Garden, BBC 2's Great Garden Revival and Channel 4's Weekend Kitchen. He also contributes regularly to Gardeners' Question Time on BBC Radio 4.
Matt has written four books on gardening and garden design. The latest is The Urban Gardener for the Royal Horticultural Society, published in 2014. He is currently working on his fifth (preliminarily entitled How to Plant a Garden), again for the Royal Horticultural Society. Matt has also written for a number of newspapers and magazines, including The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times, Real Homes, GardenLife and The Garden.
Matt has won awards for his design work and continues to run a design practice based in Cornwall, with clients in the UK and abroad.
