As a former Deputy Governor for Financial Stability at the Bank of England and an ex officio member of the Monetary Policy Committee, Sir John Gieve speaks with considerable authority on the future of banking, global financial systems and related topics. He is currently Chairman of VocaLink, a major provider of payment systems in the UK, and is also a non-executive director of CLS, the forex settlement system, and of Morgan Stanley International.
Before joining the Bank of England, Sir John was Permanent Secretary at the Home Office during a period when the department was responding to the increased terrorist threat in the wake of 9/11. Other responsibilities included programmes to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, co-ordinating the Criminal Justice System, the identity card scheme, immigration and asylum.
Prior to working at the Home Office, Sir John spent twenty years at the Treasury, involved in banking and City regulation, energy, public services and the Budget. He carried out spending reviews for both Labour and Conservative governments, and served as Private Secretary to three Chancellors: Nigel Lawson, John Major and Norman Lamont.
