Mike Atherton

As one Britain’s most successful cricket players of the 1990s, Mike Atherton certainly knows all about the importance of team work and success. An opening batsman for Lancashire and England, he captained England in 54 Test matches. He was voted the Cricket Writers' Cricketer of the Year in 1990 and named one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year in 1991.

A degenerative back condition cut short a promising career and led to his early retirement from the cricket field in 2001. Undaunted, he swapped the bat for the microphone and became a key member of the Channel 4 team that covered Test Cricket in England between 2002 and 2005. During this period he also worked as a commentator for BBC Radio and Talksport on Test matches outside England. Mike joined the Sky Sports commentary team in 2005, after they won the rights to live Test cricket in England. Today, he covers all forms of the game, both home and abroad.

As well as his TV and radio commentating, Mike has also written for the Sunday Telegraph, as well as being a cricket correspondent for The Times. His achievements were crowned in 2010 when he won Sports Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards. The judges declared that this was a unanimous choice, praising the former England cricket captain for “tackling subjects way beyond cricket”, further noting that “the brilliance of his writing shines.”
