Alec Stewart OBE

A much valued pundit on cricket shows, both on TV and over radio airwaves, Alec Stewart earned his richly deserved laurels as an English cricketer who led the England Cricket Team to a number of notable victories. A right-handed batsman-wicketkeeper, Alec is the second most capped English cricketer of all time in Test matches, and the third most capped in One Day Internationals (ODIs), having played in 133 Tests and 170 ODIs.

Alec was England's keeper-batsman until his retirement in 2003. His highest Test score, 190, was against Pakistan in June 1992 (his fourth century in five Tests). In 1994, at the Kensington Oval, he became only the seventh Englishman to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, scoring 118 and 143 as the West Indies were beaten at their Bridgetown fortress for the first time since 1935.

Alec took over the England captaincy from Mike Atherton in 1998 and promptly led the side to its first major series win for 12 years against South Africa. After being axed after England lost in the 1999 World Cup, he hit top form again during the 2000 one-day triangular series, when he scorched a century in his 100th Test. He crowned his achievements against India at Lord's in 2002, becoming England's most-capped Test cricketer, overtaking Graham Gooch's record of 118 matches.

Alec continued to give his all for England until he called it a day after England's drawn series with South Africa in 2003. However, he remains close to Surrey Cricket Club as an Ambassador of the game.

Alec now bowls them over as a regular cricket analyst on BBC Radio 5 Live and across both Sky Sports' and BBC TV's cricket coverage.
