Diarmuid is the maverick garden designer with rebellious charm, wit and creative force a highly popular figure in the gardening world, combining extensive experience and knowledge of garden design with a lovable personality and more than a hint of Irish charm. Whether it is as a TV presenter or a public speaker, Diarmuid never fails to win over audiences, even those whose first love is not found amongst the dahlias or border shrubs!
Diarmuid has a reputation for uncompromising, functional yet beautiful design and has cultivated a large number of awards as a gardener over the years, including a gold and bronze at the Chelsea Flower Shows of 1995 and 2001, respectively, a Silver Gilt Medal at the Chelsea Flower Shows of 2004 and 2007, and two RDA Gold Awards in 1991 and 1993. He has also gained kudos as an author, with Outer Spaces and Diarmuid Gavin’s Big Ideas proving to be huge hits with gardening enthusiasts.
His high-impact gardens, which use experimental materials and fantasy-fuelled designs, are the perfect example of his rebellion against the suburban reserve that shaped his early years.
When questioned about where his love of Gardening comes from and the way he sees a garden Diarmuid says: “I used to look at my parents' back garden which was very neat but awful and think about ways I could explode it.. “ and when questioned about who influences him and what makes a good garden Diarmuid say’s … “Edward Scissors-Hands, Roberto Burle Marx, Willy Wonka, Garrett Eckbo!... A good garden can mean different things to different people – beds of fruit and vegetables, a lawn full of daisies, a terraced Italian utopia or a rockery fully of gnomes. Live and let live!”
Diarmuid is a reluctant gardening sex symbol but his uncompromising style and devilish approach won him an equal measure of adulation from female fans and garden devotees. He continues to court controversy and the battles to create his 2016 Chelsea Flower Show garden have made compulsive TV viewing in BBC's Diarmuid's Big Adventure.
With presenting experience gained through hit TV shows such as Gardener’s World and Home Front, Diarmuid’s impressive knowledge and easy going personality make him the perfect candidate for product launches and public speaking events. Diarmuid was fantastic, really nice and friendly with all the staff and brilliant with his audiences too, exactly what we wanted. Thanks for helping to get him here, (he also gave me a chocolate chicken as it was Easter Sunday, so he can’t do any wrong as far as I’m concerned!).
