David Harewood is a distinguished British actor who is probably best known for playing David Estes, the Deputy Director of the CIA's Counterterrorism Center, in the Showtime series Homeland (repeated in the UK on Channel 4).
David began his acting career in the early 1990s and soon began appearing on stage; theatre work includes playing Martin Luther King in The Mountaintop and Theseus in Moira Buffini's play Welcome to Thebes. He is also known for his television roles, with appearances in Ballykissangel, The Vice, Fat Friends, Hustle, Robin Hood and Mrs Mandela (playing Nelson Mandela). Film roles have been prolific and include Blood Diamond, The Merchant of Venice The Hawk, Great Moments In Aviation, Harnessing Peacocks, Mad Dogs And Englishmen, Macbeth On The Estate, Strings and The Hot Potato.
David also played parts in the BBC film adaptations of the Philip Pullman novels The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North. He also appeared in the Doctor Who story The End of Time, and the character Martin Viner in an episode of New Tricks. He received an MBE in 2012 for services to drama.
