Carl Bildt is a former Swedish Prime Minister with a distinguished career in both the domestic Swedish political arena and the wider international field. He served as Prime Minister of Sweden from 1991 to 1994, and was leader of the liberal conservative Moderate Party from 1986 to 1999. In addition, he was Sweden's Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2014.
Amongst many leading international roles, Carl Bildt has been High Representative for the peace negotiations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with responsibility for the implementation of the civilian parts of the Agreement for Peace in the region. In 1999, he was asked to re-engage on the Balkan issues as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, and served in that capacity until 2001.
In addition to engaging in international issues, Carl Bildt has held positions in the private sector and with international think tanks, including serving as the first non-US member on the Board of Trustees of the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, and on the Advisory Board of the Centre for European Reform in London. He has also served as non-executive director on numerous company boards.
