Born in Northern Ireland, Captain Nick Bates is the offspring of two traditional seafaring families. His father spent most of his adult life at sea and his grandfather, on his mother's side, was a traditional sailing shipmaster.
Not long after leaving college, Nick joined the cargo ship subsidiary of the legendary Cunard Line, Port Line, and began learning his trade on the UK to Australia/New Zealand run. He received his first command in 1995, onboard the Cunard Countess. He went on to take command of the Crown Majesty, the Seabourn Goddess II, the Caronia (where he met his wife) and, completing the circle, the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2.
Having retired from his outstandingly successful career at sea, Nick now spends much of his time preparing for and giving a wide variety of Presentations and After Dinner talks throughout the UK and Ireland. With his natural, confident delivery and a treasure trove of fabulous, often hilarious tales, Nick is in great demand on the speaker circuit. He has also published a very funny book With a Pinch of Salt, which explains, in his own unique fashion, the origin of many every day expressions that can be traced back through our nautical heritage.
