Jade Jones

Jade Jones is Team GB's youngest ever Olympic medallist, and Britain's first ever taekwondo gold medallist, gained at the London 2012 Olympics in the women's 57 kg category.

Like all great Olympians, Jade's success was the result of years of hard work and dedication. Born in North Wales in 1993, she was introduced to Taekwondo, aged eight, by her grandfather as a means of self-defence. Jade proved herself to be a natural talent and enjoyed a quick and prolific rise through the ranks to become the UK's number one junior of any division, male or female.

Initially fighting in the 55 kg division, Jade turned pro in 2010 and that same year competed on behalf of Great Britain at the Youth Olympics in Singapore, taking Team GB’s first ever gold in the sport. Her medal haul continued on a grand scale in 2011, with the highlight being the silver she won at the World Championships in South Korea - missing out on gold by the narrowest of margins after losing in a sudden death decider against her Chinese opponent, Hou Yuzhuo.

Jade's ultimate victory was won on home turf at the London 2012 Olympics, where she competed once again against Hou Yuzhuo of China, this time round gaining a justly deserved gold medal for her amazing skills and attacking style (which earned her the nickname "The Head Hunter"). She commented at the time that being beaten by Yuzhuo "wasn't happening again in front of my home crowd".

Still in her early twenties, Jade has already picked up countless awards for her sporting achievements, including BBC Wales Young Sports Personality of the Year and Jaguar Academy of Sport Special Recognition and Star of the Future Award.

She now resides in Manchester where she competes with the GB Taekwondo Academy and is currently preparing for the World Grand Prix and Rio 2016 Olympics - exciting times lie ahead!
