A former professional golfer who won no fewer than 21 major events, Peter Allis is a BBC Sports broadcaster whose distinctive voice is familiar to millions of golf fans. His authoritative yet warm personality has also made him one of Britain's finest after dinner speakers, with a wealth of golfing stories, all told with timeless wit and charm. He skilfully weaves these golfing anecdotes in a way which captivates audiences whether they are golfing aficionados or not.
His father, Percy Alliss, was among the finest golf players of his generation, so it was perhaps inevitable that Peter would also make a career in golf. A professional from 1946, Peter played in eight Ryder Cup matches and 10 Canada Cup matches before entering the broadcasting field. He has twice been captain of the Professional Golfers' Association and was the first president of the European Women's Professional Golfers Association, as well as past president of the British Greenkeepers' Association.
Peter retired from the professional golf circuit in 1969, which led to a full-time career in broadcasting. He is recognised around the world for his television commentaries for ABC in the United States and the BBC in Europe, as well as for the Australian and Canadian Broadcasting Corporations.
In addition to commentating, Peter fronted 140 episodes of the popular BBC series Pro-Celebrity Golf between 1974 and 1988, which progressed to an informal chat show on the fairways, Around with Alliss. His most recent television series, A Golfer's Travels, has been aired on TV channels worldwide.
Peter is also a formidable writer, having penned 20 books - the latest being Golf Heroes - and regular columns and articles for golfing magazines. He is an honorary member of various Golf Clubs around the world and has been awarded honorary doctorates from St Andrews, Bournemouth and Humberside Universities.
Peter is everything that an After Dinner Speaker should be – a polished, witty raconteur with a veritable fund of anecdotes. He is also an ideal Awards Host and speaker at Sports-themed corporate events. Please contact a Prime Performers Booking Agent on 020 7251 8222 to discuss your requirements.
